MINOR ALEXANDER | Signal / Noise Sculpted Colour

Groupshow with Doris Marten and Wolfgang Flad

MainStage | 15. APR 2023 – AUG 2023

The MainStage hosted in spring 2023 a group show entitled Signal / Noise – Sculpted Colour. The Signal-to-Noise-Ratio usually describes the level difference in the transmission of the actual signal and the noise floor induced by the recording and/or the transmission itself be it on the sending or the receiving side. In this sense we must wonder what happens if the Signal and the Noise become the same or at least are hardly separated.

In the case of this exhibition color and material are becoming inseparable. The form is shaped of colour, the colour is the substance of form. It is about colour as a material not colour as an adjective. It also leads us to think about the importance of subject matter. „There is no such thing as good painting about nothing.“, as the abstract artist Mark Rothko would say. Also Michael Fried’s essay on Art and Objecthood (1967) comes to mind where he states that „the shape is the object (…)“.

The Ukrainian-born German artist MINOR ALEXANDER (*1981), who lives and works in Berlin and Zeitz uses a powdered velvet coating that is either electrostatically applied to a substrate material or used as material in and of itself. If it was possible to paint and sculpt just with pure dry pigment, this is what it would look like. We understand the world through a velvet coloured lens.

MINOR ALEXANDER

DREAMCOAT - Rising Stars Residency 2017

MainStage [ 19. AUG 2017 – 07. JAN 2018 ]

We are excited to introduce, in the fourth installation of our Rising Stars Residency, the Ukrainian-born artist of German origin Minor Alexander (*1981).

Minor Alexander studied at the Schools of Fine Art of Saarbrücken and Karlsruhe and has completed a lecture position at the Weissensee School of Berlin. He lives and works in Berlin and Leipzig, Germany.

The artist creates images, sculptures and objects out of various and diverse materials from foam to stone, which he flocks with a velvet-like particle powder. His approach is at once painterly and sculptural. He frequently uses the found object and takes on concepts of Duchamp, Yves Klein and even Christo without resorting to appropriation. Skillfully and always with a sly sense of humour he reveres or irreverently references art historical greats from Leonardo DaVinci to Bruce Nauman.

In his solo show Dreamcoat he covers ‚things‘ with a plastic-painterly coat. With the proverbial (in German) infallibility of a sleepwalker and with keen aesthetic instinct he creates images and objects that are in the truest sense of the word ‚unlikely‘. We are not only showing his latest works created during his Residency at the Till Richter Museum but also some of his previous positions in order to give you a good overview of his creative amplitude and development.
