LEV KHESIN & MINOR ALEXANDER | NO STATEMENT REQUIRED

HIGHLIGHT SUITE  [ 16. APR 2022 – AUG 2022 ]

February, 24th, 2022: Putin sends his soldiers into Ukraine. Contrary to international law. The world is righteously outraged. Anti-Russian resentment quickly arises. Cancel Culture in the arts demands public statements and test of conscience from artists. There are forced resignations, firings and boycotts. How moronic! The artist Lev Khesin (*1981, Penza, Russia, lives and works in Berlin) is also asked to provide such a statement by the curator of a group show in which his works are included. He is against the war and not against saying so publicly.

Thus I had the idea of doing an exhibition with a Russian artist and a German-Russian artist who was born and raised in Ukraine - No Statement Required. The art is the statement. And the fact that they both needed less than a minute to agree to the show and its concept.

In the Highlight Suite we see the almost classical flock paintings of Minor Alexander (*1981, Nikopol, Ukraine, lives and works in Berlin and Zeitz) and the almost iconic silicon art by Lev Khesin side by side. Yet each of the artist also shows very recent works. Minor Alexander is harkening back to antiquity and researches the phenomenon of modern imitation at the example of current day plaster cases of antique statues. Whereas Lev Khesin experiments with digital technologies and modern electro-mechanical devices.
