Die MainStage beherbergte im Frühjahr 2023 eine Gruppenausstellung mit dem Titel „Signal / Noise – Sculpted Colour“ beherbergen. Der sogenannte Signal/Rauschabstand steht in der Technik für die Niveaudifferenz in der Transmission zwischen dem eigentlichen Signal und dem Rauschteppich, der als Teil der Aufnahme oder der Übermittlung entsteht, entweder auf der Sender- oder auf der Empfängerseite. In diesem Sinne stellt sich die Frage, was passiert wenn Signal und Rauschen eins werden oder nicht mehr getrennt werden können?
Im Falle dieser Ausstellung verbinden sich Farbe und Material zu einer Einheit. Die Form ist aus Farbe gemacht, die Farbe ist die Substanz der Form. Es geht um Farbe als Material statt um Farbe als Adjektiv. Dabei muß man natürlich auch an „subject matter“, also den Bildinhalt denken.
„Es gibt nicht sowas wie ein gutes Bild über nichts.“, wie der abstrakte Künstler Mark Rothko sagte. Auch der Essay „Art and Objecthood“ (1967) von Michael Fried fällt dem Kunsthistoriker dazu ein, in dem er u.a. sagt: „die Form ist das Objekt (…)“.
Auch der Künstler WOLFGANG FLAD (*1974) lebt und arbeitet in Berlin mit einer ganzen Reihe ungewöhnlicher Materialien. Diese haben alle gemeinsam, dass sie sich in einem nachhaltigen Materialmanagementprozess befinden, bei dem alles recycled oder gar upcycled ist und bei dem alles benutzt und wiederverwendet wird. Zum Beispiel werden Bretter ausgeschnitten und gefräst, dann lackiert. Die dabei angefallenen Späne werden wiederum zu Skulpturen oder Dust Paintings verarbeitet. Ebenso werden Bücher und Altpapier geschreddert, gefärbt und zu Skulpturen geformt. Nichts geht verloren, alles ist geformt und gefärbt.
The MainStage is hosting a group show entitled Signal / Noise – Sculpted Colour. The Signal-to-Noise-Ratio usually describes the level difference in the transmission of the actual signal and the noise floor induced by the recording and/or the transmission itself be it on the sending or the receiving side. In this sense we must wonder what happens if the Signal and the Noise become the same or at least are hardly separated.
In the case of this exhibition color and material are becoming inseparable. The form is shaped of colour, the colour is the substance of form. It is about colour as a material not colour as an adjective. It also leads us to think about the importance of subject matter. „There is no such thing as good painting about nothing.“, as the abstract artist Mark Rothko would say. Also Michael Fried’s essay on Art and Objecthood (1967) comes to mind where he states that „the shape is the object (…)“.
The artist WOLFGANG FLAD (*1974) is also based in Berlin and works in a variety of materials. What they all have in common is the recycling and upcycling process of sustainable material management where every part is used and reused. Boards are cut out and lacquered and paintings are made with the dyed saw-dust particles. Books and old paper are shredded, dyed and formed into sculptures. Nothing is lost, everything is shaped and coloured.
